San Luis Obispo, CA (PRWEB) March 31, 2012
It’s no secret that track and field athletes know injury well. For multi-event track athletes whose events include running, jumping, and throwing, staying injury free is essential to keeping their careers alive. Many sponsors will drop athletes plagued with injuries and in many cases, an injury could be career ending.

San Luis Obispo, CA is home to two top level and 2012 Olympic hopeful track athletes – Heptathlete and 2008 Olympic High Jumper Sharon Day and Decathlete Chris Randolph. Both train up to six hours, six days per week in hopes of making the 2012 Olympic Track and Field Team, and both have recently found benefit in physical therapy.

mechanical patient transfer

Healthcare workers often experience musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) at a rate exceeding that of workers in construction, mining, and manufacturing.1 These injuries are due in large part to repeated manual patient handling activities, often involving heavy manual lifting associated with transferring, and repositioning patients and working in extremely awkward postures. The problem of lifting patients is compounded by the increasing weight of patients to be lifted due to the obesity epidemic in the United States and the rapidly increasing number of older people who require assistance with the activities of daily living.2,

You hope the discharge planner was a good one. You hope the doors aren’t too narrow for the wheelchair and the bed is higher than knee-level. Even then, as likely as not, your work area will be the size of a crawlspace and strewn with clutter and medical equipment.
Welcome to life as a home healthcare provider. In 2007, America’s 896,800 home healthcare workers reported a staggering 27,400 injuries.1 Some of these resulted from unintentional needlesticks, latex allergies, and violence against providers. However, the most common injuries were sprains, strains, and other musculoskeletal injuries related to lifting and moving patients.

AUSTIN (KXAN) - Just-released photos of an injured University of Texas soccer athlete show there is progress.

Kylie Doniak has been recovering since early February, when she was hit by a suspected drunken driver in Downtown Austin as she crossed the street.

Photos from the CaringBridge website show her hugging her dad during physical therapy and another of her kicking a soccer ball as she's seated in a wheelchair. They are the first images of Doniak since the hit-and-run wreck.

New tools tackle chronic pain - Houston Chronicle

New tools tackle chronic pain - Houston Chronicle: Judy Franklin tried surgery, physical therapy, nerve-blocking injections and a variety of medications to deal with chronic back pain over the past 30 years.

Nothing worked for long.

Late last month doctors implanted a spinal cord stimulator in the Pasadena resident's lower back. The device sends a low-voltage dose of electricity to the spinal nerves to stop pain signals from reaching the brain.

"I'm not going to say it's a cure-all," the 70-year-old said last week. "But it's working fairly well."
